Founded in 1828, the town of Brandon was named after the first native Mississippi governor, Gerard Chittocque Brandon. Brandon has grown from a 40-acre tract town to an over 26-square-mile city making it the 16th largest city in Mississippi. Her residents enjoy large-city amenities while not losing the small-town charm.

Brandon schools are part of the Rankin County School District, the third largest school district in Mississippi. The Rankin County School District has the lowest tax rate of any school district in the metro Jackson area. The RCSD supports the B.E.S.T. mission: Bring Everyone’s Strengths Together. The Rankin Campus of Hinds Community College is conveniently located in nearby Pearl on Highway 80. The Rankin Campus is a commuter campus that offers small classroom sizes and highly qualified and caring faculty. Students can pursue academic or career/technical programs of study.

The City of Brandon Senior Center is a recreation center for persons 55 years of age and older. Located on Highway 80 in the Brandon Municipal Complex. The Senior Center offers a variety of programs, trips, special events, activities and classes which are low-cost or absolutely free.

- Back to School Bash kicks off the school year and allows parents and children time to walk around and see their friends and visit vendors, grab a bag of popcorn, and watch the Brandon band, cheerleaders, and dance team.
- The Princess Ball is a unique event to Brandon where dads and their daughters get to spend time together dancing, visiting friends, having pictures made with Miss Mississippi, and using props in the photo booth.
- Patriotism in the Park is Brandon’s annual 4th of July celebration that provides something for everyone. The children’s bike parade and space jumps provide free, quality fun for kids while multi-church choirs sing patriotic songs, all followed by an exciting fireworks show.

Parks & Rec
The City of Brandon offers recreational and leisure activities for children through adults. Youth Baseball and Softball are offered in the Spring and Fall for ages 5-12. Tackle and Flag Football registration occurs in July, with games being played August through November. Adult programs are for those 17+ in age. Adult Kickball games are played September through October. Co-ed flag football games are September through early November. Brandon currently offers a Table Tennis League for all ages, Youth Day Camp for those 6-10 years old and Ready, Set, Run! offered to those 8-13 year of age in the Spring and Fall. Goshen Springs is the place to cast away your cares. Fish from a boat or the shore and catch bass, perch, or giant catfish. Located up-river along the “Rez” with easy access from the Natchez Trace, it is one of the hottest locations for fishing tournaments.
